Leazes Park
A fun-filled tennis Open Day, to be held at Leazes Park, Newcastle, in conjunction with the LTA’s Allplay campaign.
The day will be held on 22 April 2012, between 1pm – 4pm. Please drop in at any time to try out the fun, different tennis activities we’ve got on offer!
Activities on offer will be:
Cardio Tennis tasters (a workout on a tennis court!)
Touch Tennis tasters (mini tennis for adults!)
Fun doubles matches
Prizes to be won (including coaching sessions with the coach of your choice and a new Babolat racket)
The whole day is free, so please do drop in, and bring the family!
Allplay is a campaign that aims to get more people playing tennis – you can sign up online for free and link with clubs and places to play, and also with other people who are a similar standard to you, to make the most out of your tennis experience! The under 14 road to Wimbledon competition is set to take place after the Easter holidays so get yourselves signed up on the sign up sheet on the competition board in the clubhouse. The draw will take place after the Easter holidays so don’t wait!
Players will compete against each other, with the final for boys and girls taking place on Saturday 19th May. The winner of each event will then compete against the winners of the other clubs within the North East who will then travel down to London to compete against the other counties!
Winter League has finished, the clocks have gone forward and the sun is shining – now it’s time for summer tennis! We have mens and ladies coaching starting this week, as well as the ever popular Wednesday Night Social play. Here’s the details…
Starting 27th March 6:00pm. Mens team practice with coaching which for the first 4 weeks will be provided by Mike Thorpe. Mike is a former coach of James Nelson and he will be representing Great Britain in over 45 competition at La Manga this September. You don’t have to play on one of the teams to come to this session every man is welcome.
Starting 28th March 6:00pm. Wednesday Night Social Play. Social play on all 5 courts.
Starting 29th March 6:30pm. Ladies team practice with coaching which for the first 4 weeks will be provided by Brandon Gilhooley. Just like last year Brandon will be providing coaching which will start at 6:30pm on 29th March, 6:00pm on 4th March, 6:00pm on 11th March and 6:30pm on 18th March. You don’t have to play on one of the teams to come to this session every lady is welcome.
Winter League organiser Chris Gray would like to announce that Winter League has been successfully completed, and completed with a success!
The 1st team struggled in the group stages but managed to win 3 playoff matches to pick up a consolation award. It is the 2nd successive year that GLTC has picked up one of these awards. In the final, after an arduous trip the team of Chris Gray, Cameron Haswell, Carolyn Coatsworth and Chris Hollins beat Yarm 2nd team 7-1.
The 2nd team had an excellent season winning their group and competing in the main playoff event! By beating Morpeth they reached the semi finals where the team of Sue Trousdale, Chris Trousdale, Nick Clunies-Ross and Kim Todd lost 7-1 against Jesmond 1st team.
The 3rd team had some fun, gave many players a chance to play and gave some opportunities to players who had never previously represented Gosforth a chance to play for the club!

Head of Junior Coaching Glen Newton would like to announce that this Sunday 25th March all 5 courts will be in use between 9:30am – 10:30am and 11:30am – 12:30pm while the juniors are given competitive opportunities in a LTA Ratings Tournament.
No, I’m not talking about the mens 1st team – this is even better! Details below about some great live tennis in Sunderland.
The National Premier League finals, as you might know, are being held this year at Virgin Active Wearside in Sunderland. This is a men’s doubles league which has been played throughout the country during the winter, culminating in the finals in April.
There are 14 teams who have made it through to the finals, and we’re hoping that players such as Liam Broady and Dan Evans, who was instrumental in helping the Great Britain team to success in the last Davis Cup tie, will be playing for their teams.
The matches are going to be held over three days, and if you are interested in going to go watch some of this great quality tennis, tickets are on sale now. The details of the days are:
First Round: Thursday 12th April, 1pm and 6pm (our local teams are Virgin Active Wearside and Tennis World, so come along and support our players!)
Price – £5 per ticket (£3 concession for 16U year olds)

There will be a great atmosphere over the 4 days, and it would be a great trip out for your club members – inspire them with some fantastic, local tennis! We would love this event to stay in the North East in the years to come, so please do support it if you can.
